Sophomore Choir is comprised of AHS sophomore students. These singers have rehearsal every other day, sectional practice once every two weeks, perform in three concerts per year, and sometimes participate in MSHSL sanctioned contests for Large Group and Solo-Ensemble. Individuals from the choir are encouraged to compete in the MSHSL Sub-Region Vocal Solo-Ensemble Contests.
· Alternate day rehearsal allows students to maintain membership in AHS music performing groups within the AHS block schedule. Sophomore choir meets for 37 minutes every other day; for example: M-W-F, T-Th through two weeks of school. . Building individual musicianship, creativity, teamwork, and music literacy are important long-range goals for the choir.
· Each section also works for 20 minutes about every other week with Mr. Sellheim. This sectional time is used to check parts, explain good singing habits within the section, and develop good singing technique. Sectional meetings are part of the grade the students receive as well.
· Three concerts per year encourage our choir to set goals and work hard.
· The annual Sub-Section Large Group Contest is held at a host school in Sub-Section 17. Music groups perform for a panel of three judges who evaluate each choir. All choirs compete against the standard of a quality high school performing group. Sophomore Choir has an opportunity to compete in this event.
· Solo-Ensemble contests are opportunities for individual students to sing a solo for a judge. Some sophomores choose to prepare for this experience through after school individual lessons with Mr. Sellheim or another voice teacher.
· Smartmusic assignments are used to assess student's individual growth as singers and musicians.
